Buddhism parasol / umbrella. In Buddhism, the parasol is a symbol of royal dignity and protection from the heat of the sun. Besides that, it also represents protection from the “heat” of negative forces, like greed, lust and suffering, obstacles in the path towards enlightenment.

An early grouping of symbols included: throne, swastika, handprint, hooked knot, vase of jewels, water libation flask, pair of fishes, lidded bowl. In Buddhism, these eight symbols of good fortune represent the offerings made by the gods to Shakyamuni Buddha immediately after he gained enlightenment.

The umbrella usually symbolizes the canopy of the heavens, shelter, and protection. The parasol is a symbol of the SUN, and an umbrella is a symbol of the shade. It is often an emblem of power and dignity.  Above the mountain is the dome of the sky. This is symbolized by the parasol umbrella, whose important function is to cast a shadow, the shadow of protection. 

 The upside-down umbrella as Chatra represents is the symbol in the rainwater harvesting industry just like the mountain upholds the sky. For most people it represents a change in the way we think about rain- from nuisance to cherished natural resource.

The Sanskrit term 'chattra,' also means 'mushroom,' in an obvious reference to its shape.
