The Chakheis a traditional instrument from South East Asia usually associated withThai or Khmer music.  In the traditional Thai system of organology, Chakheis classified as Plucking (plucked string instruments; à¹€à¸„รื่องดีด, khrueang dit)-- Chakhe (จะเข้) - crocodile-shaped fretted floor zither with three strings. The first twostrings are made from silk, and the last is made from bronze.

The Chakhe(Thai: จะเข้, pronounced [t͡ɕā.kʰêː], also spelled Jakhe or Ja-khe), or Krapeu(Khmer: ក្រពើ; also called Takhe, Khmer: តាខេ, Takhe, Takkhe or Charakhe), is a fretted floor zither or lutewith three strings used in Thai and Khmer music. The Thai and the Khmerinstrument are virtually identical.

Our productsare made of Jackfruit wood in a stylized crocodile shape and is approximately20 cm high and 130–140 cm long. It has eleven raised frets made of wood, graduatedbetween 2 and 3.5 cm in height, which are affixed to the fretboard with wax orglue. Its highest two strings are made of silk yarn, catgut or nylon while thelowest is made of metal. They are tuned C–G–c. The instrument is usuallysupported by five legs.

In order toplay; the player who sit beside the instrument, their left hand goes onthe frets, to change the pitching, while right hand strikes the stringswith an ivory plectrum tied to your index finger and bracing it with the thumband index finger. 

In Thaimusic, the Chakhe is part of the Mahori ensemble, in Khmer music, the Krapeuis part of the equivalent Mohori. Among the Khmer classical instruments,the Takhe is probably the most recently introduced; it is assumed to be adoptedfrom Thai music. It is used for wedding music, A-yai, and Chapei music as wellas modern music.

Chakheand Krapeu are alsorelated to the Myanmar/Mon mi Gyaung (Kyam), which has however realisticzoological features and not just the abstract form of a crocodile. Moredistantly, they are also related to the Indian Veena.
